PORTLAND, Ore. — After scoring a career-high 41 points Saturday night against his childhood favorites, the Lakers, Klay Thompsondidn’t know how he possibly could top the performance. It took him only one night to figure it out. Thompson swooped into the lane and floated in a tough one-hander for a one-point lead with 8.9 seconds left, then teamed with Draymond Greento steal the ensuing inbounds pass, leading the Warriors to a 95-90 victory against Portland on Sunday night at the Moda Center. “Anytime there’s pressure, that trumps a big scoring night in a 20-point win,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerrsaid. “To me, this was even more impressive.” With the Warriors trailing 80-79 with 5:38 remaining, Kerr reinserted Stephen Curryand Thompson into the lineup. LaMarcus Aldridge tried to one-up everything the Warriors’ backcourt did, scoring 10 points in the final 5:06. His step-back jumper put Portland ahead 90-88 with 2:01 remaining, and the Warriors followed with three consecutive empty possessions, despite getting one decent look each for Curry and Thompson. Aldridge forced up an errant corner three-point shot with 32.9 seconds left, and Andre Iguodalaraced the length of the court to pick up a shooting foul. But he missed the second of two foul shots, leaving the Warriors behind 90-89 with 26.3 seconds on the clock. The Warriors trapped Wesley Matthewson the inbounds play and then knocked the ball away from Portland’s shooting guard. After a video review, they were awarded the ball out of bounds with 14.5 ticks remaining and designed a play for Thompson. If he was open when he came off a screen, Thompson would have fired a jumper, but Matthews stayed with him. Thompson tried to get to the rim, but Matthews remained right on his hip. So the shooting guard floated in the game-winner, giving him a game-high 29 points. “Those are the moments we play for, and that’s when it’s the most fun. That’s what the fans pay to see,” Thompson said. “I didn’t want to lay a dud after a great game (Saturday) night. The greats always come out and perform again.” After opening the season with victories at Sacramento and against the Lakers, this was the first real test of the Warriors’ season. They were playing on the second night of a back-to-back set against a playoff team that completely buys into a good defensive scheme. The Warriors responded by opening the season 3-0 for the first time since the 1994-95 squad started 5-0, and Kerr became the first Warriors head coach to win his first three games since Neil Johnstonin 1959. The Warriors have won 20 of their past 28 road games. They have won six of their past eight games against Portland.
